The Wild World of Drawing Materials: 5 Tips to Keep You Sane

Are you starting to draw? Not sure which drawing materials to buy? Well, welcome, oh, brave beginner artist, to the wonderfully wild world of drawing materials! As you embark on your recent journey, you’ll soon realize that choosing the right tools can be as daunting as facing a blank canvas. But fear not, dear reader, for I am here to guide you through this maze of pencils, paper. So buckle up and let’s dive into the madness!

1. Start Simple, Stay Sane

Alright, let’s get started! When it comes to drawing materials, simplicity is your best friend. Start with the basics : a trusty set of pencils and a decent sketchbook. You can find them in bookshops, creative stores, or even on the Internet (if you prefer to stay at home…). Starting with black pencils on white paper is, in my opinion, the best. You don’t have to buy expensive pencils at first; cheap pencils can be very efficient. Don’t get too fancy too soon, or you’ll end up drowning in a sea of unnecessary gadgets and gizmos. Keep it simple, keep it sane!

2. Embrace the Weirdness

Oh, you thought drawing was all about being serious and sophisticated? Think again! Embrace the weirdness of drawing materials. Charcoal that gets everywhere? Embrace it. Pens that leak at the worst possible moment? Embrace it. You’ll learn to love the quirks and quirks of your tools; they’re what make each drawing unique! A drawing is never wrong, it can just be different! Find your style by taming your material.

3. Quality Over Quantity (…Most of the Time)

Sure, it’s tempting to splurge on every shiny new art supply you come across. But before you max out your credit card on that deluxe set of rainbow-colored pencils, remember this golden rule: quality over quantity. Invest in a few good-quality pencils and paper that will stand the test of time. I can truly recommend the brands ‘Faber-Castell’ and ‘Winston & Newton’. Trust me, your future self will thank you… and so will your wallet.

4. Learn to Laugh at Mistakes

Listen, we’ve all been there, especially when we were like you, beginners. You’re halfway through a masterpiece when disaster strikes. Your pencil slips, your ink smudges, and your eraser leaves a giant hole in the paper… Instead of throwing your supplies out the window in frustration (tempting, I know), learn to laugh at your mistakes. It’s just a reminder that it’s not always the material’s fault; you have to learn how to use it, and it can take time (even if it’s frustrating). Maybe I should write a blog post about it. Anyway, embrace the imperfections; they’re what make your drawings uniquely yours!

5. Don’t Take It Too Seriously

Last but not least, remember this: drawing is supposed to be fun! Don’t take it too seriously, or you’ll suck all the joy out of it. So what if your drawing doesn’t turn out exactly as you envisioned it? So what if your pencil is a little wonky or your lines are a bit wobbly? The important thing is that you’re creating, and that’s something to celebrate!

Congratulations, dear beginner artist, you’ve survived the whirlwind tour of drawing materials! Armed with these five tips, you’re ready to tackle the wild world of art with confidence and gusto. So go forth, my friend, and may your pencils always be sharp and your paper never be smudged. And remember,  don’t forget to laugh along the way! (: Just below you’ll find an example of a drawing (and I’m really proud of) that I realized with only a 2B pencil and a Canson paper, everything is possible! (:
